Applying for the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency. (DVLA) can require specific pieces of identification, one of which is a marriage certificate (also known as a wedding certificate). If someone gets married abroad and then wants to use their wedding certificate as identification in their DVLA application, they will first require a certified translation. A certified translation is one which is stamped and accompanied by a declaration which states that the translator is a qualified language professional and has provided a true and accurate translation of the document.

The example of a Venezuelan wedding certificate is an interesting one because they are issued in two forms: long and short. When a client recently asked us to translate their certificate for use in a DVLA application, we advised them to check with the DVLA which form would be required for this purpose. We did so because our quotes are based on word count (as well as language combination), and so the shorter certificate would be significantly cheaper.

It turned out that the shorter certificate would suffice for the DVLA. This meant that the cost of the certified translation fell within our minimum charge of £65. This price includes VAT, certification and first class/airmail postage. Unlike many companies, at TransAction we state the total price in our initial quote for certificate translation, rather than quoting an initial price and then later adding extra costs for post, VAT and certification.

Once payment had been received, we were able to complete the translation quickly. We also proofread the translation twice in-house, to make sure it was absolutely perfect. This ensures the kind of quality necessary to make a DVLA application run smoothly. At TransAction, this double proofreading service comes as standard, and is carried out by our qualified linguists. Once the translation had been approved by the client, it was certified and sent by first class post. The time from us receiving the initial enquiry to when the finished translation was posted was, in this case, just three days.
