If you were married abroad, it’s likely that you will require a certified translation of your marriage certificate for official purposes back in the UK. Whether you need the official translation to change your name with UK banks, the Passport Office or the DVLA or with any other UK authority, a certified translation from TransAction will be sufficient. As a registered member of the ATC our certified translations, which comprise a copy of the original, the translation and a declaration, are accepted by all UK authorities and other official bodies as such as the GMC, SIA and UK universities.
Marriage certificates issued in Turkey are a particularly interesting case. There are two different types of documents, either of which may be issued depending on the particular registry office: a family booklet in Turkish which gives information about all members of the family or an international marriage certificate. The name of the latter can be somewhat misleading. Although the marriage certificate is supplied in an international format with a legend providing translations of words or abbreviations used into several European languages, the registrar may enter information in Turkish only, such as nationalities or additional notes.
If you have a Family Booklet-type marriage certificate you will need to have translated only those pages which relate to the marriage, not the whole booklet. We will be able to advise on the pages required on seeing a copy of the document.
If you have been provided with an international Turkish marriage certificate this may be accepted by the relevant authorities; however, it is best to check first. Should you require a certified translation of the Turkish family booklet or an international marriage certificate issued in Turkey, please get in touch. We are usually able to have the completed certified translation sent out within 3-4 working days and we will do our best to accommodate urgent deadlines where possible.
