We completed a job a couple of weeks ago which was slightly out of the ordinary for our certificates team. The client required a certified translation of a degree certificate issued in the Philippines for application to a UK university. Not having dealt with a Filipino enquiry since I joined the team a few months ago, I was intrigued when our translator confirmed that he worked with the Filipino/Tagalog-English language pair. According to Filipino Culture Resource website, Tagalog is one of the major languages spoken in the Philippines, mostly by people from the Tagalog regions in the main island of Luzon and it has a strong affinity with Malay languages. It also serves as the base for Filipino which, along with English, is one of the official languages of the Philippines. The website offers some great resources, including simple lists of vocabulary for those who like to dabble in language learning.

Filipino, being the official language and the more formal of the two, was the language used on the certificate, which also included some English terms.
